Do you want to be a paint inspector? Love your job!

You work as a paint inspector, please tell us how did you encounter that kind of job?

I had graduated from Nha Trang University in June 2005, my main major was General Mechanical for Ship building & Naval Architect. However from February 2005 to May 2005 I got Tranning & Practice course for preparing University graduation at Painting Dep’t of Huyndai Vinashin Ship Yard in Vietnam (HVS), at that time I became a trainee painting engineer.  When I graduated at University, I came back to HVS and I worked on a painting supervisor position.

-      I worked for HVS until Sep 2009 , then I moved to Saigon Offsore Fabrication Engineering ( the company belong to EMAS group) in Vung tau city where I live until present. My current position is QA/QC senior painting inspector for anoffshore project.

How long do you work at this field?

I got over 8 years experience in Painting job.

What do you like about this job?

Painting jobs are making a beautiful life, perfect structures, buildings and contructions by cosmetic properties. Painting jobs are being protective above things by giving anti-corrosion, anti-fouling, especialy saving money by giving long life for all those structures, building...etc.

During your job you have to have interesting experiences, what is for you the most interesting thing you have experienced as a paint inspector.

One experience that sticks in my mind during 8 years of my painting works, which is also the first experience most exciting for me to learn when I got 1st week worked for Hyundai Shipyards in July 2005. That time I got the painting task in-charged painting for Ship repair from Greek MV‘ ‘Thetis“. The ship was in last stage for applied top coat for Topside. The top coat had applied in nightshift, while i checked at STBD , the Portside painter applied topcoat without mixing hardener (curing agent), so the paint was not dry all areas of Portside of Topside. (That time I didn’t know what is between paint and hardener, why need to mix them) . The final result was that all areas of Portside of MV Thetis had to reblasted by sweep blasting to removing un-dry top coat and re-painted.

Is there some project in your history as paint inspector which was from some reason special?

As I have mentioned above that the MV “Thetis“ is the first project (Cargo Hold Carrier) gave me a special reason for starting work.

During 4 year working for HVS I also got many special projects with vary different reasons, among them that a series Chemical Oil Tank Project from Singapore, the Bow Series such as: BOW CAPE, all tanks was applied ethyl Zinc silicate over thickness than specification then mud cracking appearance .

What advice would you give to people who want to become a paint inspector?

To become a painting inspector the person who will conduct paint inspection works should have basic knowledge about materials for metallic & non-metallic, natural materials. Then they should know about corrosion & painting technology.

To do a good job as an inspector, one need to love the job, always think about that in everywhere around self can be seen a nice of sideview meaning that no corrosion, no contamination, no dust occur. Also during inspection period inspector should create the best possible co-operation and flexibile working with contractor or applicators.
