Chlorofluorocarbon; A family of inert, nontoxic, and easily liquefied hydrocarbons in which two or more hydrogen atoms are replaced with chlorine and fluorine atoms. Because CFCs are not destroyed in the lower atmosphere, they drift into the upper atmosphere where their halogen components destroy ozone.
