Wiki / LOSS OF COOLANT ACCIDENT (LOCA)

An accident in a nuclear reactor in which water spills from the system to the extent that the fuel in
the reactor is no longer immersed. A LOCA leads to rapid buildup of heat, since the core is
deprived of the cooling influence of the water. The LOCA is the design basis accident for the
containment.
