The concentration, at ordinary ambient temperatures, of a compound in air below which an
explosion will not occur if the mixture is ignited. The concentration is expressed as a percent of
the gas vapor in air by volume. When the concentration of a substance in air is above the lower
explosive limit and below the upper explosive limit (UEL), the mixture will burn and explode
